Tax Investigations

Being the subject of a tax investigation by HMRC can be a stressful and worrying experience. With self-assessment, HMRC staff can review cases on a 'sample basis'; consequently, tax investigations have become more frequent. Recent media coverage of ‘tax dodgers’ and the allocation of more funding to HMRC to bring in increased tax revenues has also resulted in the number of tax investigations rising.

J H Riley Associates Limited offer a wealth of experience in dealing with HMRC investigations, whether they are enquiries into an individual's tax return under the self-assessment regime, more detailed enquiries or employer-related investigations into PAYE and P11d compliance. If you are about to be the subject of an investigation, we can provide expert help and support.

The professional costs of dealing with a tax investigation can be high as time must be spent gathering the requested information and formulating appropriate responses. These costs are borne by the taxpayer even if HMRC find no case to answer. We offer all our clients the opportunity to participate in our ‘Tax Investigation Service’. For an annual subscription this service covers the cost of answering HMRC investigations and costs a fraction of the fees incurred during an investigation.
